Boutique Hotel Beekhuizen is located in the middle of the Veluwezoom National Park. If escaping to nature is high on your list, this 5,000-hectare park won’t disappoint. You’ll find untouched forests, moors, sand drifts, and – surprisingly enough for the Netherlands – hills!
This holiday escape is perfect for anyone looking for tranquillity amongst the flora and fauna. We guarantee this hotel will help you forget time for a while. For me, it was hard to believe that this site is only a 10-minute drive away from Gelderland’s big city Arnhem. Why? Because I found myself surrounded by 350 km of forested cycling, walking, and riding trails!
The rooms
This small-scale yet charming hotel has a total of 21 lodges and (junior) suites with spacious bedrooms and tons of privacy. All include WIFI, air- air-conditioning, eco-friendly items, and a unique view over the estate. No matter which room you choose, each has its own quirky features and an attractive interior that encompasses the history of the area.
Our room
We stayed in the Junior Suite with a terrace that overlooked the neighboring forest! The room was quite spacious with a fridge stocked with drinks for purchase, a cozy living room, a bedroom with a comfortably large bed, and a bathroom that had a rainshower and (our favorite) a bathtub. The lovely view of nature from our window created a relaxing vibe, so we knew immediately we were in for a gezellig evening.
The garden
Thanks to the wonderful location of our room, we had visual and walking access to the trails through to the hotel gardens as well as the forest. Because we were literally in the middle of nature, a short walk took us downstream along the Beekhuizense brook to a large pond with a small waterfall — the perfect setting for rejuvenation. We also found out that you can actually explore over 350 km of the forest! You can cycle, walk, or ride horses on their picturesque trails.
Fun fact: Along the way, you’ll likely spot animals such as wild boars, badgers, and roe deer. Talk about an environmental enthusiast’s dream!
The bakhuis
The main facility of the nature retreat is called the Bakhuis. This is where you’ll find the reception for check-in and check-out, but it is so much more than that. Here, they serve a delicious breakfast every morning, buffet style, and have a lovely seating area that overlooks their garden and the forest. In the afternoon or evening, you can enjoy a nice glass of wine by their wood-burning stove. Kiki and I enjoyed ourselves a lovely glass of prosecco upon our arrival.
The honesty bar
In the bakhuis you’ll also find the Honesty Bar. For a late-night treat, this is your go-to. Open from 11 am to 10 pm, this special service offers a wide range of coffee, tea, surprising wines, local beers, and other (non-alcoholic) drinks. Not to mention there are tons of fun snacks and various local products. Kiki and I took a night stroll and decided we needed a midnight snack. Thanks to the Honesty Bar, we were able to enjoy a delicious charcuterie board and a bottle of red wine! As the name implies, this bar is based on a trust system. We kept track of what we consumed and paid at the end of our stay!
Check-out
At the end of our stay, we checked out at the Bakhuis, paid for our extra snacks and drinks from the Honesty Bar, and made our way to the bus stop. A personal tip from us if you aren’t driving? Pack light. Ubers are difficult to come by here and the walk to the nearest bus stop is through the forested trails! Beautiful, but not great if you are pulling a suitcase. Overall, we enjoyed our nature getaway at this gorgeous buitenplaats. We definitely want to come again when the flowers are in full bloom.
