For sustainable travel enthusiasts, Four Elements Hotel in Amsterdam should be at the top of your to-visit list. Green living and luxury coexist in the inaugural energy neutral hotel in the world!

This eco-friendly haven is nestled in IJburg, a neighborhood in Amsterdam situated on an archipelago of artificial islands in the IJmeer. From the central station, you can reach this 10-story building within fifteen minutes by tram. Offering a wide view over the IJmeer, it is the ideal location for those who wish to explore Amsterdam while enjoying a serene holiday.

The four elements

The name ‘Four Elements’ is not arbitrary; it symbolizes the convergence of the four classical elements (fire, air, earth, and water) in the foundational concept of this structure. This results in an energy-neutral hotel, providing a distinctive and sustainable experience.

The building ensures a clean, allergy-free environment. Utilizing wind power, it receives a fresh air supply every two hours, mimicking the inhalation and exhalation process like ours. Water is employed not only to regulate and heat airflows but also serves as a natural filter. Sunlight is harnessed for electricity generation, while public spaces come to life with abundant natural light. Finally, the restaurant exclusively sources seasonal ingredients from our small country (the earth).

The rooms

The 195 nature-powered rooms, varying in size, share a common understated aesthetic. Complemented by unique design elements and soothing color tones, each room features a desk, flat-screen television, and a bathroom with a shower. All furnishings are either reused or repurposed, minimizing environmental impact without compromising on luxury. Expect floors made from reclaimed wood, linens given a second life, eco-friendly paint and textiles, and furniture crafted from recycled PET bottles.

The in-house restaurant

Contrary to the imposing exterior, the interior exudes warmth. The lobby seamlessly opens up to the Herbs Garden restaurant, adorned with a leafy ceiling canopy reminiscent of a floating garden. It serves as an ideal setting for a culinary experience with local flavors. Chef Herb and his team operate the open kitchen, offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Emphasizing the principle that fresh food provides more energy, the menu revolves around locally sourced ingredients, adapting to the seasons. This approach not only enhances nutrition but also ensures sustainability by minimizing unnecessary gas emissions.

Although our visit coincided with a lockdown, our veggie burger – accompanied by fries and beer – was still enjoyable in our room. However, a dinner in the restaurant would have provided a more atmospheric and pleasing experience.

The rooftop bar

On the top floor, the elegant Wind Sky Bar boasts breathtaking views of the IJmeer, Durgerdam, and the IJburg marina. Regrettably, it was closed during our visit, but a delightful tour (thanks!) allowed us to appreciate the views and the Instagram-worthy interior. On a regular day (lockdown-free), the bar offers surprising performances, impressive DJ sets, and original cocktails!

Have breakfast and explore the city

In the morning, the chefs stand ready to prepare a delightful breakfast, providing the necessary energy for exploring the hotel and the city. If the weather permits, guests can choose to watch the boats or bask in the sun on the Waterside terrace next to the marina. Book your stay now!
