Särna, Sweden | best things to do on a half-day trip

Sometimes the best places are the ones you don’t plan — just a tiny dot on the map that ends up staying with you. That’s exactly what Särna was for us. We were spending two weeks in Sälen and decided to take a little detour, and somehow this half-day trip turned into one of the most perfect stops of our whole Sweden getaway. Särna isn’t big. It’s not busy. And it’s definitely not on most ‘must-see Sweden’ lists. But maybe that’s why it felt so special.

Why Särna is worth a stop

We didn’t have a big plan, Särna just looked like a nice little spot between Sälen and Fulufjället National Park. What we found was a peaceful village with a 17th-century wooden church, a free open-air museum, and a quiet lake. It’s small, simple, and incredibly calm, with just enough history and scenery to make a short visit feel meaningful. If you’re already in the area, it’s the kind of place that’s perfect for a slow few hours.

A quiet stop by the lake

Before we saw anything else, we pulled over by the lake just outside Särna. It wasn’t planned, we just saw the water from the road and decided to stop. There’s nothing flashy here: just a small lakeshore, calm water, and a peaceful view. But it set the tone for the whole visit. We stood there for a few minutes, enjoyed the silence, and then decided to walk into the village to see what else was there.

Särna’s 17th-century wooden church

Our next stop was Särna gamla kyrka, a small 17th-century wooden church surrounded by trees. It’s one of the oldest preserved wooden churches in Dalarna and was once used by local Sámi communities as well. Inside, it’s simple and atmospheric: wooden benches, hand-painted details, and soft light coming through tiny windows. We had the whole place to ourselves, and there was a small guest book at the entrance. Of course we signed it!

If you like history but hate crowds, this is a stop you’ll really appreciate. I know I did.

The Open-Air Museum next door

Right next to the church is a free open-air museum (homestead museum). It’s a small collection of old Swedish farm buildings — barns, stables, storage houses — all left open for visitors to walk through.

A few helpful details:
– Many buildings date back to the 1700s–1800s
– They show how farmers lived seasonally between village and forest
– There’s no entrance fee, staff, or gates. You can just wander around

It’s simple, but surprisingly interesting. We walked around and peeked inside the old rooms. It’s a really nice add-on to the church visit without needing more than 15–20 minutes.

Things to do in Särna

If you only have a few hours, here’s exactly what you can do:

– Visit Särna gamla kyrka (17th-century wooden church)
– Sign the guest book inside the church
– Explore the open-air museum right next to it
– Walk or drive to the lake viewpoint
– Stroll through the tiny village centre
– Stop for a fika if anything is open (very seasonal!)
– Combine your visit with Fulufjället NP (Njupeskär waterfall) or Sälen

It’s a small place, but that’s what makes it a good half-day stop.

How to get to Särna

Särna is easy to reach by car and sits between Sälen and Fulufjället National Park.

From Sälen → ~45 minutes
From Fulufjället NP → ~25–30 minutes
From Idre → ~40 minutes

This area is very rural, so having a car is essential.

Särna isn’t a big destination. It’s simple, quiet, and takes maybe two hours to explore. But that’s exactly why we liked it. The church, the open-air museum, the lake.. it’s all small-scale, but memorable in its own way. If you’re already staying in Sälen or exploring northern Dalarna, Särna is a really lovely half-day detour.

Save for later!
