Thanks to its four-star monastery hotel, Sittard is possibly the most beautiful cultural heritage location in the South of the Netherlands. Featuring a mix of contemporary luxury and hints of the past, MERICI Hotel is a must-visit for history buffs.

As exclusive as its surroundings, MERICI is located in the fully restored monastery quarter in the heart of the city. Its name derives from Angela de Merici, founder of the Ursuline Order of nuns. This monastic order educated girls between 1843 and 1946 in the buildings adjacent to the hotel. Over the years, this architectural beauty has had many different purposes. Today, it serves as a spectacular holiday escape.

A renovated Monastery

During the renovations, the owner ensured the monastery’s original elements were incorporated into the new design. As you walk through the hotel, you can actually feel its history in the atmosphere: the peaceful corridors, the faint whispers of prayers, and the flamboyant décor.

The rooms

They have five types of overnight options in varying sizes — the comfort room, superior room, suite, junior split level, and the bridal suite! And although it is a historic building, all 89 rooms look very modern! Each option has airco, all the bathroom amenities you might need, a desk, free internet, a safe to keep your important belongings, minibar, segafredo coffeemaker, rain shower, and television. It’s easy to see that no matter which room you choose, you’ll have a comfortable stay.

Tip: try staying in room 505 like we did, this one features the only balcony in the hotel and has an amazing view over the yard.

The restaurants

MERICI houses two exquisite restaurants, ensuring your appetite is always satisfied. George’s is located in what used to be a Jesuit boarding school but its transformation has left it unrecognizable. Now, you’ll find a luxurious culinary hotspot with an open kitchen. Bistrot Volte, found in the former Ursuline convent, is a hidden gem with a stunning vaulted ceiling.

Unfortunately for us, thanks to Covid-19, we had a 5pm curfew. This meant we had to enjoy our dinner in our room. Our 3-course meal was incredible and Michelin star worthy. During breakfast we enjoyed fresh fruit and granola from their buffet. Whether you have a savory or sweet tooth, you’ll certainly start your day off satisfied!

Guided tours

For me, one of the highlights of staying in this former convent is the opportunity to take a guided tour of the nearby buildings. The quarter has seven monuments to explore, like St. Michiel’s church and the neo-Gothic building Mariapark. Also, the hotel has a beautiful connection to the Basilica and the Oude Markt. Furthermore, it is surrounded by a historic Dominican wall, with adjacent battlefields, gardens and canals! A dream stay, whether you’re a historophile or not.
