Happy Island | sleep in a former oil boiler on this little island!

Looking for absolute relaxation? Look no further than the Westeinderplassen! Surrounded by lush greenery on a secluded island, you'll find everything you need for a truly tranquil experience. At Happy Island, your happiness takes center stage, making anything possible in this serene haven.
A private island near Schiphol

This happy island is located in close proximity to Amsterdam, in North Holland. Traveling from Schiphol to Oude Meer was a breeze. Upon our arrival, we were warmly greeted by the owners, Daisy and Michel. Given the island’s secluded nature, the sole mode of transportation is… by water. Thankfully, they operate a charming ferry to transport their guests. Just a simple phone call, and they’ll promptly pick you up at the water’s edge!

A colorful oasis in the Westeinderplassen

Following a brief cruise, we reached their vibrant island in the heart of Westeinderplassen. Truthfully, I had never heard of it – my bad – but it proved to be a captivating wetland, featuring interconnected small ditches and numerous pools. Moreover, the ample space allows for a variety of water sports and activities! If you have an appreciation for flora and fauna, this locale comes highly recommended. Our aquatic adventure unfolds later in this article…

Various distinctive accommodations

While we chose to stay next to their main residence, Happy Island offers a range of unique lodgings, including their former (rose) greenhouse, oil boiler, or even right on the water – on a camping raft or in a safari tent. Their passion lies in crafting an atmosphere and experience that leaves a lasting impression on their guests, fostering tranquility of mind, body, and life throughout Happy Island.

Formerly a rose cultivation site, the rose greenhouse is nestled near Aalsmeer. Here, you’ll discover two double bedrooms, a bathroom, a living room, and a fully equipped open kitchen. What’s more? You also have access to a spacious garden! Another former greenhouse, the luxurious Ship House, offers equally generous accommodations.

For those who truly relish water-centric experiences, an exceptional camping adventure awaits on one of their camping rafts. Spend your days sailing through the beautiful nature reserve, and in the evening, set up your tent to sleep literally on the water. For a comparable experience with a touch more space, they also offer rafts with a sturdy and more upscale safari tent – floating on an island, encompassing 250m² of land.

Stay in a converted oil boiler

Situated in the heart of the island, adjacent to their own charming residence, is an old oil boiler that once served to heat the greenhouses. A few years ago, they transformed this structure into an incredibly beautiful dwelling for overnight stays.

Despite its seemingly modest exterior, the (now) blue boiler reveals ample space inside – so much so that its industrial past is scarcely noticeable. Spread across two floors, the lower level boasts a gas stove, kitchenette, dining table, a comfortable sleeping sofa, and a record player for some cheerful tunes. Ascending the stairs takes you from the ocher yellow tones of the ground floor to a luminous and serene bedroom upstairs, complete with a spacious, cozy double bed and an open bathroom.

Upon arrival, a sweet message on the door and a bottle of bubbles awaited us – the happiest way to kick off any staycation.

On and around the island

The delight extends beyond the charming boiler itself, as the vibrant paradise surrounding it offers a plethora of attractions. Fortuitously, we visited on one of spring’s sunniest days, providing the perfect opportunity to soak up the sun. Whether lounging on the sunbeds or swaying gently in the hammocks, it was an immensely enjoyable experience! For those inclined to take a dip, the island’s waters beckon, and after a refreshing swim (weather permitting), you can unwind in the inviting hot tub. Although we opted out of swimming this time, we certainly took full advantage of the hot tub’s warmth.

On an enchanting excursion

Naturally, our visit wouldn’t be complete without venturing onto the water to explore the stunning surroundings. Thankfully, Happy Island provides several options for water exploration: a canoe, kayak, or SUP board. Catering to all their guests, they’ve curated an audio tour that guides you through the nature reserve enveloping the island. This isn’t just any tour—it’s designed in line with their happiness concept, offering insights into the wildlife and tips for cultivating a joyful mindset. The experience is a blend of sporty, relaxing, and educational elements, leaving us with pleasantly sore muscles after an invigorating kayaking session. Despite the physical exertion, it was unquestionably worthwhile and added the perfect finishing touch to our Happy Island escapade.

Additionally, for those seeking more structured training, they offer various courses designed for resilient men and ambitious women—more details available here.

An unforgettable blend of adventure and relaxation

The following morning, we awoke to a delightful ambiance, prepared and enjoyed breakfast in the warm sunlight, and reveled in the serenity for a while. Following a sweet indulgence in some ice cream, we were gracefully sailed back to the mainland, marking the end of our idyllic retreat. Undoubtedly, departing from this island leaves one with a profound sense of happiness. Whether your quest is for tranquility or adventure, this extraordinary destination seamlessly delivers both.
