Top 10 | European capitals Kiki can’t get enough of

With 2025 already in full swing, I’ve been reminiscing about some of my all-time favorite European capitals — places that have left a lasting impression on me and keep pulling me back. Some I visited recently, others not for a while, but they’ve all earned a spot on this list. Of course, I’m heading to Copenhagen next month, so this ranking might just change soon.. For now, here’s my current Top 10, ranked with love (and maybe a little wanderlust):

1. Ljubljana, Slovenia

If you know me, you know this isn’t a surprise. Ljubljana is my all-time fave — it just feels right. It’s cozy, charming, and surrounded by gorgeous nature. One of the things I love most is how close it is to everything I enjoy. In less than two hours, you can find yourself hiking in the mountains, relaxing by the sea, or even crossing the border into another country. It’s the perfect mix of city life and easy access to incredible outdoor adventures. Plus, having friends here who I absolutely adore makes it feel like a second home. Whether I’m strolling along the Ljubljanica River or sipping coffee (or Prosecco; let’s be honest) in a café, I’m always happy here. Can I move there already?

2. Tallinn, Estonia

I’ve only been to Tallinn once, and it was just for a short time — but wow, did it leave an impression! More than any other city I’ve ever visited, it truly feels like stepping into a fairytale. The charming cobblestone streets, the medieval architecture, and the city walls make it almost too picturesque to be real. There’s something magical about wandering through its quiet alleys and discovering hidden gems. And the best part? It’s not overrun with tourists (yet), which might just be part of its charm… so let’s keep it that way, haha! I’d love to go back and explore more (and the whole country while I’m at it). Don’t forget to check out our complete Talinn travel guide.

3. Zagreb, Croatia

Zagreb is one of those cities that always feels familiar and welcoming, no matter the season. There’s something extra magical about it during Advent, with its festive lights, cozy markets, and an atmosphere that feels straight out of a Christmas movie. One of my favorite things about Zagreb is spending hours sipping coffee on its terraces. Even when it’s cold out, the outdoor seating is so inviting, and it’s the perfect spot to soak up the city’s charm. And it’s not just a winter favorite; Zagreb is just as fun during the summer months, especially when you combine it with a little trip to the coast. Plus, there are some amazing people I’ve met here who I’ve had the absolute best times with, making the city even more special to me. The crazy thing? I haven’t been this year! I used to visit 2–3 times a year, so it’s wild to think I missed out. Time to fix that in 2025! You can find a complete Zagreb travel guide here.

4. Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon’s cool vibes instantly drew me in, even though I haven’t spent much time there — just a few nights and one full day. Still, the energy of the city is absolutely immaculate. Between its sunny streets, pastel-colored tiles, and that gorgeous golden light, it’s the kind of place that makes you want to slow down and soak it all in. It’s full of charm, history, and just enough quirkiness to keep things interesting. One thing I learned quickly? You can’t trust Google Maps here with all those hills — my poor feet! On that trip, we stayed just outside the city in Costa da Caparica, which is perfect for a little beach getaway combined with city life. Lisbon definitely left me wanting more!

5. Budapest, Hungary

Budapest used to be my #1, and honestly, it’s still one of the most stunning cities I’ve ever visited. The architecture alone is jaw-dropping, from the grandeur of the Parliament building to the fairy-tale vibes of Fisherman’s Bastion. But what really makes Budapest stand out is the mix of history, energy, and unique experiences packed into every corner. Whether you’re relaxing in one of its iconic thermal spas, like Széchenyi, or diving into its legendary nightlife with a visit to the ruin bars (Szimpla Kert, anyone?), there’s always something exciting to do. To me, Budapest feels like the perfect mix of Berlin’s edge and Prague’s charm — both amazing capitals, but still nothing quite like Budapest. I haven’t been in a while, though, so it’s definitely time to go back and see if it can climb back to the top spot!

6. Vilnius, Lithuania

Vilnius has such a laid-back, chill vibe, and its smaller size only adds to its charm. It’s not as hectic as some other capitals, which is exactly what I loved about it. I’ve only been during Christmas time, and it truly felt like a magical winter wonderland. The festive lights, cozy streets, and relaxed atmosphere made it the perfect place to just walk around, stop for a drink or bite, and then wander further without any rush. It’s my second favorite capital in the Baltics, and honestly, it’s the kind of city that makes you want to slow down and savor every moment.

7. Helsinki, Finland

Clean, calm, and oh-so-soothing. Helsinki is a haven for someone like me, who can get overwhelmed by sensory overload. From the moment we arrived, the city’s calm energy and effortless style wrapped us up. Whether it’s the beautiful design, cozy coffee spots, or the peaceful vibe, it’s a city that lets you just be. I loved spotting texts in both Finnish and Swedish — finally putting my 2.5 years of Duolingo Swedish to use (kind of, lol). The sea views were incredible, and I have such a soft spot for those classic red cottages by the water. Helsinki feels like a quiet kind of magic.

8. Belgrade, Serbia

If you’re looking for a good time, Belgrade delivers. It’s a party city at heart, with vibrant nightlife and a buzzing atmosphere that’s perfect for a fun trip with friends. That’s exactly what we did the last time, and honestly, we had a blast — the kind of nights you laugh about for years. But there’s more to Belgrade than just the nightlife. The city’s energy is contagious, and it’s packed with history, culture, and plenty of surprises waiting to be discovered during the day, too.

9. Skopje, North Macedonia

Skopje is one of those cities that’s just unforgettable. Its quirky mix of architecture and picturesque surroundings make it stand out from the rest. The city itself feels calm and spacious, with its massive main square leaving a lasting impression. And then there’s the Old Bazaar — a completely different vibe that I absolutely love. It’s charming, laid-back, and perfect for wandering for hours, soaking up the atmosphere. Skopje’s contrasts make it such a unique place, and its location makes it easy to explore other fun destinations in North Macedonia. It’s a little different, a little bold, and a lot of fun to explore. Check our complete Skopje travel guide for more!

10. Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Sarajevo didn’t steal my heart immediately, but it’s the kind of place that grows on you the more you explore. What makes it so unique is the contrast between its two parts — the Ottoman-influenced Old Town with its cobblestone streets and bazaars, and the more modern Austro-Hungarian section. Together, they tell a story that’s completely its own. The scars of the war are still visible everywhere, and they leave a deep impression, reminding you of the city’s resilience and strength. It’s one of the most special cities I’ve visited, and you absolutely NEED to try the Bosnian coffee here. — it’s a whole experience in itself.

That’s my Top 10 — for now! These cities have left a mark on me, but I know there are so many more out there waiting to be explored (or revisited!). I’d love to hear your favorites — are any of mine on your list, or do you have a city I absolutely need to visit? Let me know in the comments or send me a message. Let’s share some wanderlust!
