The ones that keep calling me to come back and experience more. Each place on this list holds a special place in my heart, whether it’s a recent rendezvous or a fond memory from years past. 1. Edinburgh, Scotland

Scotland in general has my heart and there’s something truly special about its capital. The gothic architecture of Edinburgh casts a spell, especially when the mist rolls in, giving the city an almost magical feel. As I wander the streets, the soulful tunes of bagpipes often fill the air, adding a soundtrack to the cobblestone paths. And let’s not forget the Scotch—each sip warms you from the inside out and is a perfect companion to the brisk Scottish air. But what truly sets Scotland apart are the people. Warm, welcoming, and full of stories, they make every visit feel like a homecoming.

2. Ljubljana, Slovenia

Ljubljana is a city that I feel deeply connected to. Surrounded by beautiful natural landscapes, it offers a more peaceful escape than the typical capital. The city’s cleanliness and relaxed pace make it a joy to explore. Adding to its charm is my own family connection—my grandma’s ancestors come from a small village nearby, giving every visit a sense of homecoming. Whether enjoying a glass of local orange wine or simply wandering the streets, Ljubljana has a way of making me feel completely at ease.

3. Dublin, Ireland

What better capital to take the lucky number three spot than Dublin? This city has an incredible vibe that’s impossible to ignore. From the moment you arrive, you’re welcomed by the warmth of the people, their lovely accents making every conversation a delight. And music is everywhere—from traditional Irish tunes filling the pubs to spontaneous street performances, that’s what I like to hear. And of course, we can’t forget the Guinness—delicious and perfectly poured, it tastes even better here!

4. Tallinn, Estonia

Tallinn felt like stepping straight into a fairy tale the moment I arrived. The cobbled streets, the enchanting architecture, and the city’s charm made it feel like something out of a dream. It didn’t take long for Tallinn to make a lasting impression, so much so that it quickly knocked another capital off my list and climbed the ranks to claim the number four spot. The atmosphere is like no other, with its perfect blend of history, beauty, and a sense of wonder that makes you want to stay longer and explore more. I’m already looking forward to returning and diving deeper into this magical city.

5. Paris, France

Paris often gets a lot of hate, and honestly, I don’t understand why. I absolutely adore it. I mean, seriously, I’m in love with everything— the food, the culture, the nightlife, and, of course, the stunning architecture. Croissants and baguettes? I could eat my weight in them and then ask for more. Every bite is perfection, and the endless cafes lining the streets only make it better. There’s a magic in Paris that I can’t quite describe, but it’s always there, whether I’m exploring museums or enjoying a late-night stroll along the Seine. Paris is just mon amour, and I’m always ready for more!

6. Helsinki, Finland

Helsinki was a pleasant surprise, and it quickly earned a spot on my list. What struck me most was how quiet the city is —something I didn’t expect from a bustling capital. The architecture is a beautiful blend of modern designs and classic influences, and I was especially taken with how different cultural elements come together in ways I hadn’t seen before. The unique fusion of Finnish heritage and international influences made Helsinki feel both familiar and refreshingly new. It left such a strong impression that I’m already looking forward to returning to explore more.

7. Rome, Italy

Rome truly is amore at first sight. This city has everything—rich history, incredible food, perfect coffee, and wine that’s simply divine. Each corner offers something breathtaking, from the grandeur of the Colosseum to the charm of a quiet piazza. And the food? Don’t even get me started. Whether it’s a plate of pasta, a slice of pizza, or a creamy gelato, every bite is a love letter to your taste buds. Pair it with a perfectly brewed espresso or a glass of local wine, and you’re living the Roman dream. As they say, when in Rome… that’s amore!

8. Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Although I live only a short distance away, I still can’t get enough of Amsterdam. The picturesque canals, lined with historic buildings, create a serene backdrop that’s perfect for exploring. Biking through the city feels like second nature, and it’s easy to see why it’s a cyclist’s paradise. And the cheese—oh, the cheese! Every bite of Gouda or Edam is a delightful reminder of why Amsterdam is a haven for food lovers. The gorgeous architecture, with its tall, narrow houses and intricate facades, adds to the city’s allure.

Berlin has a vibe like no other. Every time I visit, I’m struck by the city’s fun and carefree atmosphere. There’s an energy in the air that makes you feel like anything is possible, and the blend of creativity and spontaneity is infectious. From the bustling streets to the vibrant nightlife, Berlin knows how to keep things exciting. But it’s not all about the fun—the city’s rich history is deeply moving, with important sites and memorials that remind you of its complex past. And, of course, no visit to Berlin is complete without indulging in some excellent German beer and a good currywurst!

10. Oslo, Norway

Oslo holds a special place in my heart, not just for its beauty but for its personal connection. My ancestors on my grandpa’s side come from the nearby city of Drammen, and every visit to Oslo feels like a journey back to my roots. The city reminds me so much of my hometown, Poulsbo, Washington—also known as Little Norway—which makes the experience even more meaningful. I loved the fresh fish, the incredible cleanliness, and the sense of safety that seemed to be woven into everyday life. Oslo’s calm yet vibrant atmosphere, combined with its deep ties to my family history, ensures it will always have a cherished spot on my list of favorite places.
